DPF Cleaning
The diesel particulate filter is one of the hardest-working components on a modern diesel engine. Its job is to trap the fine soot particles produced during combustion before they reach the exhaust, and under normal operating conditions, it cleans itself automatically through a process called regeneration.
The problem is that regeneration requires sustained higher-speed driving, and for cars used predominantly on short, stop-start journeys, it often doesn’t happen often enough. The result is a blocked DPF, and it’s one of the most common diesel-related issues we deal with at Mercury Car Centre.
A partially or fully blocked DPF won’t just trigger a warning light. Left unaddressed, it can force the engine into a reduced-power mode, increase fuel consumption, cause damage to other components, and eventually result in a filter that’s beyond cleaning and needs replacing entirely at considerably greater cost. Catching it early gives you options.
Not every blocked DPF needs replacing. Where the filter is blocked but structurally sound, a professional cleaning can restore it to proper working condition at a fraction of the cost of a new unit. We assess each filter individually before recommending anything, and we’ll be straightforward with you if the condition is such that cleaning isn’t sufficient.
Our DPF cleaning process is carried out using professional equipment and chemicals, not simply an additive poured into the fuel tank. Where a forced regeneration is appropriate, we can carry that out too, using our diagnostic equipment to manage the process correctly and confirm the result.
If your car is mainly used for short journeys, the DPF will benefit from a longer run at motorway speeds every few weeks, typically 20 to 30 minutes at higher revs, to allow the filter to regenerate fully. It’s simple advice, but following it consistently can significantly extend the life of the filter and prevent the problem from recurring.
All DPF work at Mercury Car Centre is covered by our 24-month warranty on parts and labour.
Frequently Asked Questions about DPF Cleaning
Not always. If the filter has been left blocked for a long time, or has been damaged, a clean may not fully restore it. We’ll assess the condition first and give you an honest recommendation.
You can usually continue driving in the short term, but it’s important to address it promptly. If the light is accompanied by a loss of power or other warning lights, we’d recommend contacting us sooner rather than later.
If the underlying cause is simply a pattern of short journeys, the issue can recur. We’ll advise on driving habits that help the filter regenerate naturally, which significantly reduces the likelihood of it blocking again.
We work on a wide range of diesel makes and models. Contact us if you’d like to confirm we cover your vehicle before booking in.
No. DPF removal is illegal on any vehicle required to have one under UK emissions regulations, and a vehicle with a removed filter will fail its MOT. We do not carry out DPF removals.
Mercury Car Centre is a Bosch Car Service centre and a member of the RMI and IMI. We’re also registered with Trading Standards, so you can book with confidence knowing we’re held to recognised professional standards.
